Charting a course for more sustainable shipbuilding

Charting a course for more sustainable shipbuilding

The direction, goals and measures of Meyer Turku’s sustainability efforts have been defined in our sustainability strategy. The strategy ensures that we engage in systematic, long-term sustainability efforts, and helps us plan and build cruise ships of the future.

ESG – the three pillars of our sustainability

The sustainability strategy is based on three pillars: environmental responsibility, social responsibility and good governance. Through these pillars, we maintain a comprehensive and tangible approach to our overall sustainability.

Vastuullisuusstrategian kolme painopistettä

Progress of sustainability work 2017–2026

2017

Meyer Turku publishes its first sustainability report.

2018

Since 2018, the company uses only certified CO2-free electricity (Turku Energia, Ekotakuu Sähkö)

2019

Shipyard’s own solar power plant (in collaboration with Turku Energia).

2021

Meyer Turku publishes its own sustainability strategy.

2022

Supplier Code of Conduct implemented.

2022–2025 NEcOLEAP research and development project (Business Finland). NEcOLEAP enabled numerous research and development projects aimed at promoting sustainability.

2023

Since 2023, the shipyard uses district heating produced from 100% renewable energy sources (Turku Energia, Ekotakuu Kakola). Following this change, Scope 2 emissions are at 0 kgCO2e.

Renewable fuel oil, HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), is introduced for heaters used during ship construction. HVO replaces the previously used LFO.

A highly endangered rocky meadow restored next to the shipyard’s main gate.

Meyer Turku and Luonnon Kulta enter into a partnership, relocating five bees’ nests to the shipyard. Three more are brought over in 2024. ‘Shipyard honey’ is available for purchase at the shipyard’s own Logoshop.

2024

District heating line for the ship at the outfitting pier. The use of district heating reduces the need for HVO-powered and electric heaters.

HVO fully replaces LFO in fuel-powered heaters.

2025

HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) is introduced for the shipyard’s own machinery. With the adoption of HVO, direct emissions for machinery are at 0 tCO2e.

Meyer Turku updates its sustainability strategy.

2026

Revised Supplier Code of Conduct to be released.

Goals are achieved through cooperation

Goals are achieved through cooperation

As shipbuilders, we know that large projects can only be successfully delivered when top professionals across a variety of fields work together for a common goal. This is why we work in close cooperation with our various stakeholders, such as the City of Turku and local development companies, as well as national advocacy groups, such as the Technology Industries of Finland and the Finnish Marine Industries.

We are especially keen on cooperating with universities. Our goal is for Finland to be a leader in ship technology and science. High-quality engineering education is a priority to us, as the smart and innovative design and production optimisation solutions developed by our employees drive our entire organisation closer to our sustainability goals.

Future solutions – today

Our ambitious RDI activities help us take our own operations and the entire shipbuilding industry to a more sustainable direction.
