International Welding Specialist (IWS) training

International Welding Specialist (IWS) training

Obtain international qualification as a welding coordinator and deepen your expertise in welding quality assurance. 

IWS (International Welding Specialist) training qualifies you to work as a welding coordination expert who is responsible for a company’s welding quality and its development. The training is based on the requirements defined by the International Institute of Welding (IIW) / European Welding Federation (EWF). The international IWS certificate is awarded to those who successfully complete the training.

  • Trained IWS specialists are qualified to act as expert negotiators in contract discussions between the client and the supplier.

Training content

The training includes theoretical studies and practical exercises. The programme covers, among other topics: 

  • Welding processes and equipment 
  • Materials and their behaviour in welding 
  • Design and dimensioning of a welded joint 
  • Welding production and application examples 
  • Practical welding exercises 
Objective of the training

Objective of the training

A welding coordinator who has completed the training can: 

  • approve Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) 
  • assess and qualify welders 
  • supervise manufacturing and procedure tests 
  • audit subcontractors 
  • apply welding industry standards in production 
  • ensure that products comply with product order specifications.

Duration of the training:  
34 days, structured into one-week contact-teaching periods scheduled at three-week intervals. 

Admission requirements

Admission requirements

Option 1:

  • Minimum age 22 years 
  • Vocational education in the field, a welder’s vocational degree or a 6-month welding course approved by the Finnish National Agency for Education 
  • At least 3 years of welding-related work experience 

Option 2: 

  • Minimum age 22 years 
  • Upper secondary education 
  • At least 4 years of work experience in the metal industry 

Training begins in April and is organised once a year.
