The apprenticeship model consists of two parts; the first phase is a preparatory on-the-job learning period which takes approximately five months. Carried out from January to May, the learning period takes place in the Meyer Turku Shipbuilding School under the guidance of industry professionals.

During the preparatory period, students will become acquainted with, among other things:

  • shipyard work and safety practices,
  • welding qualifications required in production, and
  • the development of skills required in working life.

During this period, students’ development and readiness to transition into production roles at the shipyard are closely monitored. High-performing students are offered the opportunity for an apprenticeship, during which they can complete their degree while already employed.

The apprenticeship constitutes the second phase of the training model, where the student, teacher and workplace instructor together agree on how to match job duties with degree requirements. The objective is for the student to complete the degree by the end of the year.

“Apprenticeship training provides secondary education students with the opportunity to develop into professionals within authentic work environments. Collaboration between schools and the company ensures that skills align directly with the industry’s actual needs,” says Training Specialist Tero Iivonen of the Shipbuilding School.
